Paving chippings 2–5 mm — the German Pflastersplitt in its fine grade — is the precision bedding and joint material that defines the difference between a paver installation that lasts and one that shifts within a season. Crushed from hard natural basalt and granite, screened to a tight 2–5 mm grain window, this material is what experienced landscapers across Berlin and Brandenburg use as the standard 3–5 cm bedding layer beneath concrete pavers, natural stone slabs, and clinker bricks. Features and benefits
The defining technical property of paving chippings 2–5 mm is its angular, crushed grain shape — unlike rounded sand, the sharp edges interlock mechanically under traffic and stay where they are placed. The material is frost-resistant, compactable to high densities, and conforms to the principles of EN 13242 for aggregates in civil engineering. The narrow 2–5 mm grading ensures uniform bedding thickness and prevents the spot settling that plagues installations built on poorly graded sand.
Areas of application
Use paving chippings 2–5 mm as the 3–5 cm bedding layer beneath concrete pavers, natural stone slabs, granite cobbles, clinker bricks, and ceramic terrace tiles. It is also the standard joint filler for medium-width paving joints (3–5 mm wide), where the angular grain locks into place under sweeping and brooming. As a fine leveling course it works over a compacted base of natural stone gravel 0–32 mm.
Expert tip on processing
Always set the bedding layer at exactly 3–5 cm. Screed level with a straight edge against guide rails set to your pavement grade. After laying pavers, sweep dry paving chippings into the joints, vibrate the surface with a plate compactor fitted with a protective mat, and re-sweep. The result is a paving installation that holds its alignment for years.
