Basalt Chippings 16–32 mm
When it comes to durability and uncompromising resilience in outdoor applications, basalt chippings have long been the first choice for professionals in landscaping and garden construction. This premium natural stone in the classic 16–32 mm grading is produced by crushing solid volcanic rock that was formed over millions of years through the cooling of magma, creating one of the hardest rock types on Earth. In modern architecture, basalt is especially valued for its minimalist color intensity: while the stones appear in an elegant matte anthracite when dry, they transform into deep black, glossy accents when wet. Thanks to this visual versatility and its exceptional density, the material integrates seamlessly into contemporary designs while also providing the technical reliability essential for demanding construction projects.
Properties and Advantages
The key strength of this material lies in its extremely high compressive strength and load-bearing capacity. Since the chippings are 100% frost- and de-icing salt-resistant, they remain dimensionally stable and colorfast for decades without fading due to UV exposure. A special screening process removes the fine particle fraction (known as the “zero fraction”). The result is a highly permeable material that effectively prevents waterlogging and allows rainwater to drain directly into the subsoil.
Applications
In modern landscaping and garden construction, these chippings are a true all-rounder. They are ideal for creating stable garden paths and driveways, while also serving as a functional splash guard (drip strip) around buildings to keep façades clean. Due to their excellent drainage properties, they are also the perfect material for filling soakaway pits or surrounding drainage pipes in civil engineering projects. In decorative garden design, such as rock gardens or as an alternative to mulch in flower beds, they create premium visual accents.
Expert Installation Tip
Based on many years of experience in landscaping, I recommend a layer thickness of approximately 6 to 8 cm for full visual coverage. To keep maintenance permanently low, a high-quality weed control fabric should be installed underneath the chippings. This not only prevents unwanted weed growth from below, but also cleanly separates the premium basalt from the soil, preventing it from gradually sinking into the ground over time.
